Chapter Eleven
'Thanks for doing this, Bob,' said Jessica. 'Can you get the camera to us afterward?'
'Sure. I'm flying to the capital in the next hour. I'll drop it off on the way.'
Jessica ended the video call and logged onto another site.
Bob Kendall, an FBI agent from the Addis Ababa field office, was on site in the Harenna Forest. He had taken Tristan's body camera in as evidence. With the deadline looming, they could not afford to have him bring it to them from where it had been found, two hundred miles away. On Jessica's instruction, he had uploaded the data to an agency server she could access.
The video was soon up and running. Jessica forwarded the clip to fifteen minutes into the mission. Tristan's capture came moments later, with the now familiar sight and sound of the flash bang grenade.
Whiteness filled the viewer of his body camera. A shadow swooped down from above. There was a thud and a grunt. Gunfire erupted in the background as WOLF engaged the enemy.
The smoke from the grenade gradually cleared. The image from Tristan's body camera changed to the floor of the tunnel and the boots of his captors as he was dragged half-conscious along the ground. Explosions followed. The rumble of the tunnel caving in echoed from the monitor's speakers.
They heard Tristan moan. The perspective changed as he stumbled and struggled to his feet. His captors came into view.
Rachel leaned forward and studied the screen. The men all wore ski masks. Their eyes shone eerily in the camera's night vision. They shouted at Tristan in Afrikaans and forced him into a brightly-lit cave.
'Is there enough there for voice analysis?' said Rachel.
'I doubt it,' said Zac.
'I agree,' murmured Pippa.
Through the chaotic jumble of images that followed, Rachel glimpsed crates of ammunitions lining the walls of the cavern. WOLF's assumption had been correct. The people behind Melissa Hunt's abduction were no amateurs.
Tristan and his captors entered another system of tunnels.
Clint straightened. 'Is thatâ?'
Some fifteen feet ahead, a group of men were hurrying along the passage. A slender figure with her hands tied behind her back swam in and out of view among them, arms gripped by a couple of masked figures. At one point, she struggled against her captors and glanced over her shoulder.
Jessica froze the clip. They stared at the screen.
'Well, at least we know she was alive and well up till then,' said Lea.
Although she was gagged and the image was in the infrared spectrum, it was clearly Melissa Hunt on the video feed.
'Keep going,' said Jason in a hard voice.
They watched as Tristan was manhandled through more caves and tunnels after Melissa and the other men. The sounds of a gunfight grew in the distance. Then they were outside the mountain.
The camera's night vision caught the flash of muzzles from the Ethiopian Army ground forces engaging the men guarding the caves. The sounds of the fierce battle were overshadowed by the sudden whistles and explosions of RPGs. Bright light flared across the viewfinder.
